Christmas on the Danube
Our first Viking river cruise through the heart of Europe | December 2023
Seven nights. Four countries. One river.
In December 2023, we boarded Viking Ingvi in Budapest, Hungary, for our first traditional river cruise, a Christmas journey along the Danube ending in Passau, Germany.
Along the way, we explored historic cities, wandered through Christmas markets, experienced a snowy Vienna, and discovered an entirely different style of cruising.
We weren't looking for waterslides, casinos, or nonstop entertainment. We wanted something more intimate: fascinating destinations, excellent regional food and wine, good conversation, and the freedom to explore without constantly packing our bags.
Viking delivered exactly that.
From the illuminated Hungarian Parliament to the Christmas traditions of Austria and Germany, the journey gave us wonderful memories, new friendships, and a few practical travel lessons along the way.
Below, we're sharing our firsthand experiences, what the cruise actually cost, what we'd do differently, and what travelers should know before booking their own Danube adventure.

Our first Viking river cruise took us through the heart of Europe at Christmastime, with excellent food, memorable excursions, and a few unexpected moments along the way. Do You Really Need a Balcony on a Viking River Cruise?
Is a private balcony worth an extra $2,000 on a Viking river cruise? We spent seven nights aboard Viking Ingvi in a Standard stateroom and never missed having one. We compare the costs, cabin differences, and included amenities to help you decide when to save and when to upgrade.
