Why I Booked My Scotland Rental Car... Twice
How a £10 decision gave me the flexibility to save more than £75 and improve the start of our Scotland adventure.
One of the biggest myths in travel planning is that once you've booked something, your work is finished.
Sometimes it is.
Sometimes it isn't.
When I began planning our Scotland road trip, I spent quite a bit of time comparing rental car companies. Like most travelers, I wanted a fair price, a company with a good reputation, and a vehicle that would comfortably handle two weeks exploring the Highlands.
After comparing several companies, my decision came down to Arnold Clark and Celtic Legend.

Book when you find a price you're comfortable with.
If the option is available and reasonably priced, consider paying a little extra for flexibility.
Then don't assume your work is finished.
Stay engaged.
Read destination Facebook groups.
Browse travel forums.
If someone mentions a company or a deal you hadn't considered, spend five minutes checking.
You might confirm that you already have the best price.
Or you might discover an even better opportunity.
Would I Do It Again?
Absolutely.
I'd gladly pay the extra £10 again.
Not because I expected to save more than £75.
Because flexibility gives you options.
Sometimes it saves money.
Sometimes it reduces stress.
Sometimes it simply makes your trip easier.
Occasionally...
It does all three.
Final Thoughts
