We drove our Tesla Model X on a 1,400-mile round trip from southeast Georgia to Chincoteague, Virginia, and charging turned out to be one of the easiest parts of the journey. Convenient public charging on the island, complimentary overnight charging at our hotels, and reliable fast charging along the route meant we spent our vacation exploring instead of thinking about our battery.

Our Experience
Before leaving Southeast Georgia for our approximately 1,400-mile round-trip journey, one question kept coming up:
"Would driving an electric vehicle complicate this trip?"
It didn't.
Quite the opposite.
We followed the familiar I-95 corridor north before crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel onto Virginia's Eastern Shore.
Our final fast charge before reaching Chincoteague was at the Tesla Supercharger in Exmore, Virginia, just a short drive from the island.
From there, we had more than enough range to explore Chincoteague comfortably using local charging whenever it fit naturally into our day.
The three public chargers we used on Chincoteague were conveniently located near places we were already visiting.
Rather than sitting and waiting for the battery, we simply plugged in while walking around town, shopping, or grabbing a meal.
Charging became part of the day instead of interrupting it
Our overnight stops made things even easier.
The Tru by Hilton offered complimentary Level 2 charging, allowing us to wake up with a full battery and continue north without thinking about charging first thing in the morning.
On our return trip, the Hampton Inn offered both complimentary overnight Level 2 charging and Tesla Superchargers on the property for travelers who preferred a faster paid option.
We chose the complimentary charging, slept, and left the next morning with a full battery.
Having both options available makes it an excellent overnight stop for EV travelers.
Looking back, one of the biggest surprises of the trip was how little we thought about charging.
The battery never dictated our plans.
It simply became another part of the journey.
Curated Upgrades Recommendation
One of the biggest concerns people have about taking long road trips in an electric vehicle is whether charging will limit the experience.
On this trip, it never did.
Between reliable fast charging along the route, convenient public charging on Chincoteague, and complimentary overnight charging at our hotels, driving an EV felt completely natural.
