Global Giants vs. Local Legends: Who Should You Rent From in Europe?
When renting a car overseas, the biggest name isn't necessarily the best choice. Sometimes a regional specialist offers better value, better protection, and a more personal experience.
The Rental Car Decision Most Travelers Overlook
You've booked your flights, mapped out your European road trip, and decided that renting a car is the best way to explore.
Now comes another decision: Who gets to hand you the keys?
Most American travelers immediately recognize Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, and SIXT. They're familiar companies with established reservation systems, airport locations, and loyalty programs.
But start researching rental cars in Ireland or Scotland, and other names begin appearing. My Irish Cousin. Arnold Clark. Celtic Legend.
These regional specialists might not have the international name recognition, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth considering.
I've rented from both sides of this equation, including SIXT in Paris and My Irish Cousin in Ireland. For our upcoming Scotland road trip, I've also arranged a rental through Celtic Legend and Arnold Clark.
What I've learned is that choosing the right rental company isn't about finding one brand and sticking with it everywhere.
It's about matching the rental to the trip.
Paris on Christmas Morning: The Corporate Experience
We arrived in Paris on Christmas morning after an overnight economy flight. There were four of us, we were tired, and we still had to collect our rental car.
I'd booked through SIXT, one of Europe's major international rental companies. The reservation process had been entirely online. Efficient, straightforward, and transactional.
At the counter, however, the experience became much more personal.
I made a point of being pleasant to the woman helping us. After all, she was working Christmas morning while most people were home celebrating.
Maybe I turned up the charm a little.
In my best tourist French, which admittedly could use some polishing, I asked whether she might have a bigger car available.
She did.
We received a complimentary upgrade to what would be considered a full-size Volkswagen.
It was a simple interaction, but it illustrates something important.
A large international rental company doesn't necessarily mean impersonal service. Sometimes the person behind the counter makes all the difference.
Our SIXT experience was excellent. And I wouldn't hesitate to consider them again.
Ireland: When the Smaller Company Won on Price
Our experience renting in Ireland was different.
During the planning process, I compared the major rental companies with My Irish Cousin, a regional specialist catering to travelers exploring Ireland.
The booking experience was remarkably personal. It almost felt like arranging to borrow a friend's car.
But the actual pickup was conventional and professional, with one particularly convenient detail.
My Irish Cousin partners with Enterprise for airport pickup and return in Dublin.
We went directly to the Enterprise counter after arriving. Because our rental package was all-inclusive, there was no insurance upsell to navigate. We verified our identification, signed the contract, and headed to the rental car garage adjacent to the terminal.
The garage was well marked and only a short walk away.
We collected our vehicle there and returned it to the same facility at the end of the trip.
Simple, professional, and convenient.
In other words, choosing a regional rental specialist didn't mean sacrificing the convenience of a major international rental operation.
But where My Irish Cousin really distinguished itself was the price.
For our two-week rental, I compared the total cost of renting through the major companies, including the insurance protection we needed.
My Visa card didn't provide rental car collision damage coverage in Ireland, so relying on that benefit wasn't an option.
Once the insurance costs were included, My Irish Cousin came out approximately $500 cheaper over the two weeks.
The package also included extensive damage protection, so we didn't have to make additional coverage decisions at the counter.
Was My Irish Cousin automatically better because it was smaller?
No.
It was better for our particular trip because the combination of price, protection, and service worked in our favor.
That's the distinction travelers should be looking for.
Don't Assume Your Credit Card Covers Every Country
Many credit cards offer rental vehicle damage protection, but coverage isn't identical across cards.
A basic credit card and a premium travel card may provide different benefits. Geographic exclusions, rental duration limits, and other conditions can also change.
The solution is simple: Check the benefits for the specific card you intend to use before booking.
Don't assume that a Visa, Mastercard, or American Express automatically provides the same protection everywhere.
In Ireland, discovering that my card didn't cover the rental changed the financial comparison considerably.

Scotland: Another Reason to Look Beyond Familiar Names
Our upcoming Scotland road trip presented another opportunity to compare rental companies.
I investigated several options before arranging our rental through Celtic Legend and Arnold Clark.
One benefit that stood out was the inclusion of an additional driver at no extra charge.
That might sound like a small detail, but on a multiweek road trip, having two people who can legally share the driving without paying an additional daily fee is a genuine advantage.
Of course, choosing a regional operator doesn't automatically mean every possible expense is covered. Insurance excesses, optional protection, and other rental conditions still deserve attention.
The booking process has been straightforward, although our trip is still ahead of us.
I explain the comparison, the booking decisions, and why I ended up making two reservations in Why I Booked My Scotland Rental Car... Twice.
The Cheapest Daily Rate Isn't Always the Cheapest Rental
One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is comparing rental car prices without comparing what's included.
One company might advertise a lower daily rate but charge separately for additional drivers, excess reduction, and other services.
Another might quote a higher rate but include several of those items.
Which is cheaper?
You won't know until you've compared the total cost.
And that comparison needs to account for your circumstances.
If your credit card already provides suitable collision damage protection, purchasing additional coverage might not make financial sense.
If it doesn't, the price of that protection becomes an important part of your rental decision.
My Ireland rental is a perfect example. Once insurance was included, the regional specialist saved us approximately $500.
That's money I'd much rather spend enjoying Ireland than handing over at a rental counter.
When Something Goes Wrong
A flat tire on a remote road can quickly change your opinion of a rental company.
Before booking, find out who you're supposed to call, what roadside assistance includes, and whether a replacement vehicle is available.
The real test of a rental company isn't always how easily they hand you the keys. Sometimes it's what happens when you need help.
We've covered those situations in more detail in our When Your Rental Car Goes Wrong hub.
Sometimes the Best Rental Counter Isn't at the Airport
Airport pickup is convenient, particularly when you're arriving with luggage and want to get moving.
But it isn't always the smartest option.
Consider a trip to France that begins with several days in Paris before continuing into Normandy or the Loire Valley.
Do you really want to pay for a rental car while you're exploring a city with extensive public transportation?
You might be better off taking a train out of Paris and collecting your rental vehicle closer to where you actually need it.
That could save several days of rental charges, parking fees, and the aggravation of navigating unfamiliar city streets.
It's another reason to compare rental locations rather than automatically selecting the airport.
We explore that decision in Do You Really Need a Rental Car?
The Curated Upgrades Verdict
🟢 Go for it! Compare regional specialists with the major rental companies. Local knowledge, personalized service, and competitive pricing can make them excellent choices.
🟡 Maybe. Stick with a familiar international brand when its location, pricing, vehicle selection, or loyalty benefits make sense for your trip.
🔴 Pass on it. Choosing a rental company solely because you recognize the logo or because its advertised daily rate looks cheapest.
Final Thoughts
SIXT gave us excellent service and a complimentary upgrade in Paris. My Irish Cousin delivered a more personal booking experience and saved us approximately $500 in Ireland.
Two very different companies. Two excellent experiences.
The lesson? Rent for the trip you're taking, not the logo on the keys.
